Huawei P20 Lite: A mid-range phone that punches way above its weight

Thinking of buying a new phone? How about Huawei P20 Lite? We have reviewed it for you so that you have all your questions answered before buying it.

Design and build

Originality in design is not something that you will find in any of the phones in the market today. Not even in the colours – The same midnight black and Sunset gold. Having said that the Huawei P20 Lite looks good thanks to a glass back, rounded corners and a notch on the top reminiscent of the iPhone X.

The Huawei P20 sports a LCD screen unlike the OLED panel on the Galaxy S9 and its more expensive cousin the Huawei P20 Pro which results in little less clarity compared to the models above and the failure to deliver true blacks when required but LCD has its advantages. It is brighter than its OLED counterpart and the colour temperature is consistent even when operating high brightness levels.

The Huawei P20 is also HDR10 compatible which is the leading standard for high definition range. So if you want to buy this phone online at low price then don’t forget to check out Paytm Mall. Use exclusively paytm mall coupons and save more with CouponsCurry.

The P20 Lite has a Kirin 659 processor, a chip that you can also find in the Honor 9 Lite. It is a chip similar to the Snapdragon 625 which is used in many rival mid-range phones. The 4 GB RAM and the 64GB of storage are enough for the average user and there is the possibility to upgrade the storage to 256 GB using a microSD card.

There was no lagging during our tests even when multitasking and switching between heavy apps such as Instagram and Netflix.

The phone is powerful enough for most users and even casual gamers but if you play more intense games, you might want to get the Huawei Honor 10 View which is around 10K more expensive but uses the Kirin 970 processor which is much more powerful and can handle everything thrown at it.

Huawei’s phones are not pure android as you would know by now but uses an additional interface layer called EMUI. The Huawei P20 Lite has Android 8.0 but the interface is EMUI 8.0. If you are used to the stock android experience, this might take some time getting used to but on the plus side, there is a lot of settings you can adjust as you’d like. EMUI is worth the time getting used to and can really help you to customize the device and make it your own.

While we won’t call the P20 Lite bloated, but there are many preinstalled apps that can’t be uninstalled (music or video) but you can hide them in a folder if you don’t use them. Daytime shots are really nice on the 16 MP shooter, with really bright colours  but if you zoom in you might not notice that some details lack intensity but we are nitpicking here. The overall result is definitely good.

Sadly, the same cannot be said for the evening pictures which lack details or colours. Selfies are great thanks to the 24MP shooter. The front camera is also used for the face unlock feature which unlocks the phone using your face of course.

This is a feature we love in the Huawei P20 Lite because this is usually seen only in premium phones. It is very easy to set it up.

The Huawei P20 Lite uses a 3000mAh battery, has USB Type-C port and supports fast charging. The battery lasted for a day with casual use of social media, internet browsing and gaming.  This is slightly disappointing for a mid-range phone and we would wanted a bigger capacity battery on the P20 Lite.

The Verdict

Huawei P20 Lite is a very good mid-range smartphone which has its stunning looks, light weight and elegance going for it. It also has some features which are available only in high-end phones and there is not much to differentiate it from its more expensive P20 competitors..
